Grimsby Aquatics Swim Team secured 4th place overall in the county level competition against 21 other swimming clubs across the Yorkshire region. The Grimsby squad secured 18 medals over the weekend, 8 gold, 6 silver and 4 bronze and were only bettered by much larger squads from Leeds and Sheffield.
The squad of talented boys and girls, aged from 9 to 11, competed in the Yorkshire Swimming Association Winter Competition on Saturday 30 September and Sunday 1 October at the John Charles Centre for Sport in Leeds.
Council CEO Rob Walsh was invited to meet the squad at their first Club Championships of the season on Sunday 8th October. Mr Walsh spoke to the swimmers, club volunteers and Head Coach, Mark Sheldrick. He said ‘It was fantastic to meet the members of Grimsby Aquatics Swim Team this afternoon at their gala. I can see we have some very talented young people who are achieving great things through commitment and dedication.’
Beth Hall (11) won a superb 6 gold medals with Callum Nurse & Sarah Hedges, also both 11, bringing home 2 more golds in their 50m breastroke events. Beth, Callum and Sarah were joined by Libby Munday (10) and Matilda Newson (9) in securing further silver and bronze medals contributing to the teams’ total.
The youngsters demonstrated a strong technical performance over the weekend competition with a further 8 swimmers achieving top ten finishes – Oscar Blanchard (11), Lucas Jex, Jack Moczarski & Rio Newton, all 10 and Alfie Stratton (9) joined by Henrietta Richardson-Selby (11), Lily Stratton & Lucy Wood, both 10, and Jamie Lea Mawer (9).
