Grimsby Aquatics Swim Team saw 10 hopeful qualifiers compete against the best from club’s up and down the country at this year’s Swim England National Open Water Age Group Championships held at the picturesque Rother Valley Country Park in Sheffield on Monday 31st July.
The event saw some brave and confident swimming from Grimsby Aquatics who have built a strong national reputation for punching above its weight in these tough, longer distance events.
George Barber, at just 16, has medalled in previous years, and did not disappoint with a fantastic silver medal in his age group over the gruelling 3000m course and only 1 second behind the event winner in a time of 34.34.76.
Oliver ‘Oggy’ Duckworth (15) swam into a tremendous bronze medal position and impressively placed 6th overall in the demanding 3000m event in a time of 35.27.49 adding another open water medal to his career haul.
Next up the team from Grimsby saw the top girls, undaunted by the 18.4 degrees water temperature, competing over 1500m course with talented long distance swimmers Lucy Woodliffe (14) and Evie Barber (13) both securing an impressive 7th place in their respective age groups. Bethany Crump, also 13, secured 10th place. Experienced swimmer Isabel Newson (15) tackled the 3000m course and joined Alexander Woods (14) and Kian Brown (12) who both competed over the 1500m in congratulating team mate Danni Crumps 5th place finish in the 18-24 masters age group.
Team Grimsby had all qualified for the National Competition at the recent regional event held at Salford Quays in Manchester. The club are very grateful to Dong Energy for their continued support and sponsorship of Grimsby Aquatics National Open Water Qualifiers.
