Grimsby Aquatics Swim Team saw 5 hopeful qualifiers compete against the best from club’s up and down the country at this year’s Swim England National Open Water Age Group Championships held at the picturesque Rother Valley Country Park in Sheffield on Monday 30 July. The Championships is the country’s flagship open water age group event attracting the future stars of open water swimming
The event saw some brave and confident swimming from Grimsby Aquatics who have built a strong national reputation for punching above its weight in these tough, longer distance events. The weather was sunny, with choppy water, a slight wind and a water temperature of 20.9 0C which meant a non-wet suit requirement for the day.
In the first phase Evie Barber, swimming 3000m in the 14 year girls group, swam out in the top 3 from the start. Completing 3 laps to finish 3rd winning the bronze medal in a superb time of 39:44.
The next phase saw the 15 year old boys swimming the 3k. Alex Woods came in 11th and Joseph Ward in 23rd place.
Next up was Grimsby’s Lucy Woodliffe in the 15 year old girls 3k event. She held second place all the way round winning a silver medal in 39.52.
Oliver ‘Oggy’ Duckworth (16) swam the gruelling 5000m event, sticking with the lead pack all the way round and finishing in 4th position, only 2 seconds from third place in a very close race to the finish.
Team Grimsby had all qualified for the National Open Water Festival at the recent regional event held at Salford Quays in Manchester. The club are very grateful to Orsted for their continued support and sponsorship of Grimsby Aquatics National swimmers.
