Medals swell for Grimsby Swim Team at Yorkshire Counties

Grimsby Aquatics Swim Team were ready and eager to compete in this year’s County Championships over 3 weekends in February.  The first events were held in Leeds over Saturday 4 and Sunday 5 February followed up in Sheffield on Saturday 11th February.

The Grimsby based swim team were awarded 11 medals and saw 16 top ten finalists over the 3 days of intense competition against the best swimmers from clubs across the Yorkshire region.

Sarah Hedges (11) won silver in the 50m & 100m breaststroke events and bronze medals in 50m & 100m butterfly and 200m Individual Medley.  Eve Linton (13) secured fourth place in 100m and 5th place in the 50m breaststroke finals, team mate Evie Barber (13) secured a top 10 place in the 400m freestyle.  Isabel Newson (15) secured a place in the 50m backstroke final.

Competing in the 13 year age group Jack Wood won a bronze medal over 50m breaststroke and took fifth position in 100m & 200m breaststroke events.  Jack secured 7th place in the 50m freestyle final after a busy afternoon competing in 2 finals.  While Callum Nurse (competing in 11 year old event) came 4th in 100m and 200m breaststroke and 7th place in the 50m event.  Kian Brown (12) won a bronze medal in 200m butterfly and secured fourth place in 200m freestyle.

Competing in the 15 year old category, Oliver Duckworth won bronze in the 200 Individual Medley, 200m and 400m freestyle, whilst Joe Basdeo-Taylor won silver in 200m butterfly and secured fourth place in 200IM and fifth in 400m freestyle.  George Barber secured places in the final of the 400m freestyle and 200m butterfly in the competitive 16 and over category.  Alex Woods competing in the 14 year old category secured a place in the 400m freestyle final.

Head coach Mark Sheldrick was delighted with the team’s performances.  “Some great performances especially so soon after the festive break.  It goes to show the clubs vision and long term strategy are working.  Grimsby aquatics are fast establishing themselves as one of the best clubs in the region”.

Swimmers will be back in action again at the end of February in the final weekend of the ASA Yorkshire County Championships.  Grimsby Aquatics Swim Team offer professional swim coaching and technique development for youngsters from age 7.  Swimmers can join one of our 6 squads best suited to their level and development needs following an assessment with the Head Coach.
